Materials & Resources Required

From the Author of ART & Fear  David Bayles & Ted Orland

“The function of the overwhelming majority of your artwork is simply to teach you how to make the small fraction of your artwork that soars."

Technology that is helpful to have on hand: Elmo; MAC laptop; Projector; iPad and smart phones. iPad is available for students who do not have a  smart phone.

Technology Software, Apps or Websites: LiveBinders, Class Flow, Kahoot, jeopardy on line, Schoololgy, Google Cultural Institute, and Pinterest.

Printed Materials: As a green classroom, all documents in pdf forms are put on the on school web site and on schoololgy.

Supplies: Students pay a materials fee at the beginning of the year and we do four gallery nights through out the year where we sell donated student art work.  Thus giving Lakewood Ranch High School an annual budget of about 8 to 10 thousand dollars. These funds are used to purchase art supplies.

Students and parents are able to access mini lectures and link here. Links will be posted on school web site and schoololgy. This will give the opportunity for students to review the lecture notes.

The percentage of ESE students in the Art classes is among the highest of all the electives.  Recognizing that this is an excellent place for those students to explore thinking differently, they can excel here. Art is the best place for them to learn techniques that will also apply to their other classes.  For example, the skills used in reading a painting are high order thinking skills that are required for analysis and synthesis in reading comprehension. The visual material is often easier to utilize because it eliminates decoding issues and gives practice with the thinking skills.

The high school setting is a completely different animal.  I started my teaching career in elementary school. I have discovered that there is less professional development here. Which is so very sad since the teenagers are far more difficult to get motivated. Many of the fun silly games are out of the question for students that are so obsessed with what their peers think of them. This makes the rules for critiques very important to keep students from ridiculing each other.  It is most imperative to create a safe place for students to explore their talents.

Students are never done in the Art room.  Therefore those who rush to get the job done, gain additional practice by choosing another project or redoing the first. Many artist work in a series redoing the same subject over and over again until they prefect their ideas.  I consult with students during their progress to make recommendations for growth.  In the end they are the artists and the skill of creating visual expressions. This process needs lots of practice and explorations.

“So I said to myself...I’ll paint what I see, what a flower is to me, but I’ll paint it big and they will be surprised into taking time to look at it.  I will make even busy New Yorkers take time to see what I see of flowers.”

Accomodations

~ Physical Limitations ~

Students with visual and audio impairments will have modified goals set during conferences.

Individual Accommodations

Per student's IEP notes on plans

ESOL Accommodations:

~Think pair share for every assignment and concept discussed

~Table talks before Reading a Painting

I like to treat all students as if they have an individual education plan.  This practice comes into full swing during 2nd quarter. By this time, I am able to observe and infer the student's abilities.  My greatest gift as a teacher is being able to see the greatest possible potential of each of my students, even if they can not see that yet.  I try to hold that vision for them until they are ready to see for themselves.

Class structures include:

~Interactive activities that students can access on own to reinforce skills.

~Links provided on schoolology so students will be able to revisit sites during class and at home.

~Differentiated curriculum via individual conferences.

~Assessed items listed on board in room for reference.

~Individual conferences with students to set goals and assess accomplishments:

Please note:

Possible adjustments to the lesson : Dates and times can always be made based on the questions posed by class and needs of students.

I conduct individual conferences with my students as part of their quarterly assessment.  This practice has multiple benefits.  First it allows me to gage and design each students with individual goals. Second when I grade their sketchbooks, they never read my comments.  Through conferencing students are made accountable in a face to face interaction. I ask to see each assignment, then I ask them what grade they think their work should warrant. Remarkably they always grade way to low. These conversations set up the ground work for strong relationship between my students and myself. Students at any grade level work for relationships not grades.

Further all the mini lectures will be here on this web site and uploaded to Schoolology.

I Model artistic behavior by creating under elmo as students explore their own pieces.

Students are encouraged to approach instructor with any questions.
